Taza Chocolate is a craft chocolate company based here in Somerville, Massachusetts, known for its bold, stone-ground chocolate inspired by traditional Mexican methods. Founded in 2005 after its creators, Alex Whitmore and Kathleen Fulton, discovered chocolate making in Oaxaca, Taza uses granite stone mills to grind cacao beans, resulting in a distinctive gritty texture and intense cacao flavor that sets it apart from smooth, mass-produced chocolate. The company focuses on minimal processing to preserve the natural character of the cacao and is also a leader in ethical sourcing, pioneering a third-party certified Direct Trade program that works directly with cacao farmers and pays above fair-trade prices. Taza’s products range from classic dark chocolate bars and flavored discs to hot chocolate and chocolate-covered treats, all celebrated for their rustic feel, strong flavors, and commitment to sustainability.
